My sis & I went on a European tour during the summer of 1995 (graduation gift from our parents), that started in Amsterdam & ended in London. It was great. While wandering, we passed a wonderful looking pastry shop, and vowed to go back after dinner to get dessert. We did... and the place was closed! Horribly disappointed, we trekked all over Amsterdam on a dessert hunt. We didn't know that bakeries out there close much earlier than here, and we were on a mission. For Americans hunting down dessert, btw, Amsterdam is really disappointing - every time we saw "coffeehouse" or "cafe" we popped in, hoping for an exception to the rule that coffeehouse = pot and cafe = beer. We finally found a cafe or restaurant that had a small dessert menu and I appeased myself (sort of) with an order of profiteroles.
